Travel cot on request, just mention it when you book. There is a sofa bed in the living room for a child, and baby-friendly mugs, plates and bowls in the kitchen. First floor, one flight of stairs.

Beaches

From the easiest with a toddler to the best for bigger kids.

Best for toddlers

Meia Praia

Shallow, sandy entry that gets deeper very slowly, with no rocks. It is open to the wind, so some afternoons get choppy: pick the lifeguarded areas and check the flags. Over 4 km of sand, so walk east for space. 10 minutes by car, or one train stop from Lagos station (about 4 minutes). Trains are infrequent, so check the CP timetable first.

Best for older kids

Porto de Mós

At low tide small rock pools form, perfect for splashing and digging. Accessible-beach flag, lifeguards from June to September and a first-aid post in season. Waves can be stronger than at other Lagos beaches, so keep a close eye on small children and check the tide before you go.

Closest to Old Town

Praia da Batata

An easy 10-minute walk from the centre. Small and busy in summer, but handy when you just want an hour on the sand.

For snorkelling

Praia Dona Ana

Beautiful, calm water and great snorkelling for older kids. It is about 100 steps down, which is hard work with a pram or a tired toddler on the way back up.

Village feel

Praia da Luz

A 10-minute drive. Lifeguards and a first-aid post in summer, and easier and less hectic than the town beaches.

Good to know

  • Cobblestones: the Old Town is beautiful but rough underfoot. A light umbrella stroller copes better than a big pram.
  • Lifeguards: the bathing season in Lagos runs from 1 June to 30 September.
  • Pharmacy: Farmácia Telo, Rua Henrique Correia da Silva 1-3, about 5 minutes on foot (tel. 282 760 556). Hours change, so check farmaciasdeservico.net for the pharmacy on duty tonight.
  • Supermarket: Pingo Doce, Av. da República, 15 minutes on foot, open every day. Intermarché is bigger and 10 minutes by car for a proper stock-up.
  • Doctor or hospital: Hospital Terras do Infante, Av. Dom Sebastião, has a basic emergency service; expect waits. Children’s emergencies in this area go to Portimão hospital. Not sure where to go? Call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24. In an emergency, dial 112.
