Dog-Friendly Lagos

Bringing your dog to Lagos? Good news — this town loves its four-legged visitors. From sandy stretches where paws can run free to cafés that keep the water bowls full, Lagos has plenty of spots where your dog is welcome. Here’s our guide to the best beaches, walks, parks, and services to make your stay smooth & fun.

Beaches & Walks

Local beaches

Praia da Batata, Praia dos Estudantes, Praia do Pinhão, Praia Dona Ana, Praia de Porto de Mós, Praia do Camilo, Praia do Canavial, Praia da Luz, to Praia dos Pinheiros, each offers a unique experience.

Officially, dogs are banned from Lagos’s bathing beaches from 1 June to 30 September, all day. In practice you’ll see locals walking theirs before 9 and after 7, and so do we, but the Polícia Marítima can fine you €55 to €550, so it’s your call. That covers Batata, Camilo, Dona Ana, Luz, Meia Praia and Porto de Mós. Outside those dates, and on beaches with no signs saying otherwise, walks on the sand are usually fine. Always check the sign at the beach entrance.

Meia Praia

Our favourite dog walk October to May: miles of sand for long walks. In summer, officially no dogs; locals go before 9 and after 7.

Parque Biosaudável

Open green space for a relaxed on-lead walk, quietest in the mornings and evenings. By law, dogs in public places need a lead or a muzzle.

Cliff walks & trails

Most cliff paths are lovely on lead. Keep well back from the edges, as the cliffs crumble. Check out the Best Trails in Lagos on AllTrails or click below to see a short summary.

Street Art Walk

A relaxed, on-lead walk through Old Town linking Lagos’ street-art murals curated by LAC — follow the ArtUrb map or use a bit more up to date Lagos’ Street Art Cities map.

Bakeries & Restaurants

Dog-friendly spots for breakfast and bakeries, plus places for lunch or dinner with your dog.

Dog policies here are from our own visits. Staff and rules change, so a quick posso trazer o cão? never hurts.

Pet Vet Lagos Veterinária

Friendly town vet for check-ups. Opening hours vary, so ring ahead. Out of hours, go straight to the 24h hospital in Portimão below.

Tel: +351 282 799 268

Hospital Veterinário de Portimão

Nearest 24/7 emergency pet hospital. It’s about 20 min by car from Lagos.

Tel: +351 282 418 260 / +351 968 759 065 (24h). Av. Afonso Henriques 28, Portimão.

Pet Sitters & Walkers

Need someone to look after your dog while you explore? Animal Network Algarve is a free list of pet carers across the Algarve, built from what owners here actually recommend: sitters, walkers, boarding and daycare, Lagos included.

Two seasonal hazards: in late winter and spring, keep dogs away from the furry caterpillar trails under pine trees (pine processionary caterpillars), as their hairs sting. In summer, walk early or late; the cliff paths have no shade and the pavement gets hot.
