The 4,000-Year-Old Octopus: Why Lagos is Europe’s Best-Kept Secret

Scroll Instagram and Lagos is all sunshine, cliffs and azure water. Stand on the cobbles of the Old Town, though, and you are standing on a Celtic fort, a Roman fish-salting port, a Moorish stronghold and the launchpad of the Age of Discoveries — four thousand years, stacked.

Lacobriga: Celts and Romans (2000 BCE–5th century)

Long before anyone said “Lagos,” this was Lacobriga, a Celtic settlement built around a natural harbour. Rome took it over and made it prosper, and what it prospered on will sound familiar: fish. Salting tanks lined the water, turning the Atlantic catch into garum, the pungent fermented sauce that Roman kitchens could not cook without. Aristocrats holidayed here, on the same breeze that comes through the balcony doors.

Zawaia: The Moorish Centuries (8th–13th century)

After Rome came North African rule, and the town was renamed Zawaia. The Moors fortified it, and much of the wall you can still walk today follows the line they set. For five centuries this was a crossroads rather than an outpost — Islamic science, art, irrigation and trade folded so completely into the region that its name never left: al-Gharb, “the west,” is the Algarve you are standing in.

The Age of Discoveries (15th–16th century)

Then Lagos changed the world, and not only for the better. Under Henry the Navigator it became the nerve centre of Portuguese exploration, and in 1434 the Lagos mariner Gil Eanes rounded Cape Bojador — the cape sailors believed no ship came back from — opening the sea route down the coast of Africa. The same decade brought the other half of that story: in 1444 the first public auction of enslaved Africans in Europe was held here, on a square you can cross in under a minute. Progress and its cost, in the same square.

Earthquake, Canneries, Reinvention (1755–today)

On All Saints’ Day 1755 the great Lisbon earthquake and the tsunami behind it flattened much of the town and stripped Lagos of its standing; Faro took over as the Algarve’s capital, and Lagos started again from the rubble. It rebuilt on fish, again — by the early twentieth century more than thirty canning factories worked the waterfront, staffed largely by women. When that collapsed too, the town reinvented itself a fourth time, on tourism. Resilience here is not a slogan; it is the pattern.

Why It Matters at Octopus Oasis

We are a few minutes’ walk from all of it. The wall on your morning run is Moorish, the square you cross for coffee is where 1444 happened, and the water you swim in fed Rome. A stay is not improved by a history lecture — but knowing what is under the cobbles changes how the town looks on your second day. Ask us at check-in and we will point you at the layers worth an hour.

Four thousand years, and the town is still here, still adapting — which is as good a reason as any to name a place after an octopus. Next layer: the hundred years when Lagos ran on sardines, brine and the whistle of the canning-factory siren. That one is already up.

The Gritty, Glorious Age of Canning: What Really Happened to the Algarve’s Sardines

We promised you this one. At the end of our last post we said the next layer would be “gritty and glorious” — and here it is: the century when Lagos ran on sardines, brine, and the whistle of the canning-factory siren.

The Canning Boom (1900s–1960s)

For most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, this stretch of coast was one giant sardine operation. Over 30 canning factories lined the waterfront, and their sirens signaled a fresh catch, calling thousands of local women in to gut, salt, and pack fish by hand. Whole neighborhoods grew up around this single silver species.

The Collapse (1984–2015)

Then the fish that built this industry nearly disappeared. Portuguese sardine biomass fell from roughly 1.3 million tons in 1984 to about a tenth of that by 2015 — a 90 percent crash. Warming Atlantic waters disrupted the ecosystem, and decades of fishing pressure outran what the stock could rebuild. Portugal’s government responded by slashing the national catch quota, from about 14,600 tons in 2018 down to roughly 10,000 tons in 2019, against fierce pushback from fishing communities and the canning industry itself.

What’s Actually on Your Plate

Here’s what most visitors never learn: a good share of the sardines canned in Portugal today aren’t Portuguese at all. Around 20 factories are still running, and to meet demand with a fraction of the old catch allowed, some now source fish from Spain, Russia, and the Netherlands. There’s cautious good news too — 2020 monitoring showed a biomass increase of around 110,000 tons, the strongest rebound in 15 years — but officials are still waiting for firmer science before loosening the limits further.

Why It Matters at Octopus Oasis

We’re not telling you this to talk you out of the grilled sardines — order them, they’re still one of the best meals on this coast. We’re telling you because the tiled sardine on every souvenir shelf in Lagos is actually a monument to an industry the ocean itself pushed to the edge, and that’s a far better story than a postcard.

Next time a plate of sardinhas assadas lands in front of you here, you're tasting the tail end of a hundred-year boom and a hard lesson in limits. Next layer: how a handful of families still harvest "white gold" by hand a few kilometers from here. Stay tuned.

Summary

Lagos has a surprisingly strong fitness scene. You’ll find full gyms, modern training facilities, mobility-focused studios, reformer Pilates, heated wellness classes, outdoor training and free workout parks.

For a full gym setup, try Lagos Em Forma. For modern gym access, try LIFT Fitness. For Pilates, start with Spot Pilates or Studio86. For mobility and posture work, Lagos Mobility Gym is the strongest fit.

Lagos is small, but the fitness scene is better than you might expect. You’ll find proper gyms, reformer Pilates, mobility-focused training, outdoor workouts, and calmer studios for people who want structure without the shouting.

Whether you live here, work remotely from Lagos, or are staying for a longer holiday, a good training routine helps. Sun and beaches are nice. They do not magically fix posture, energy, or six hours of laptop hunching.

Four Things That Matter Most

These are the things our guests notice more than anything else:

1. No hair anywhere. Floors, surfaces, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom — everywhere. This is the #1 thing that affects guest reviews. Please take extra care.

2. Check for mould. Bathroom walls, living room corners, behind the yellow armchair. If you spot any, a quick clean with CIF or similar makes a big difference. Lagos gets damp and mould creeps in, catching it early helps a lot.

3. Refill everything. Soaps, shower dispensers, coffee capsules, water bottles, welcome basket, toilet and kitchen paper or items in the bathroom drawers. Guests expect a fully stocked apartment when they arrive.

4. No smudges on glass or mirrors. Shower glass, bathroom mirror, and any glass surfaces should be streak-free and sparkling. Guests notice this immediately.
